MEALS ON WHEELS PREPARES FOR ICY DELAYS

Volunteers Needed to Deliver Meal Kits for Inclement Weather

What: Meals on Wheels Winter Kit Distribution Presented by Valero

Meals on Wheels San Antonio is hosting a one-time, emergency preparedness Winter Storm Kit Distribution event for volunteers to deliver winter storm kits to the nonprofit’s 4,500 meal delivery clients. Last year, the February ice storm caused hardship for Meals on Wheels’ clients around San Antonio, leaving homebound seniors to deal with busted pipes, ruined wiring, heating, housing, and electric issues that the organization helped fix in the aftermath. These problems were exacerbated by the uncertainty of when these vulnerable clients would receive their next meal delivery.

This year, Meals on Wheels is delivering Winter Storm Kits to all clients to sustain them despite any service disruptions caused by winter storms. The Farmers’ Almanac predicts another storm later this year in February. The kits will contain five shelf-stable meals that include items such as cans of chili, beef stew, vegetables, juice boxes, cereal bars, and peanuts. The kits will also include hand warmers and emergency mylar thermal blankets. This will be Meals on Wheel’s largest distribution event ever. The organization needs 450 volunteers to help deliver the kits following COVID-safety protocol of wearing masks and leaving kits at the client’s doorstep. This special distribution event is made possible by lead sponsor Valero Energy Corporation, Blue Cares and the San Antonio Police Officer's Association, SWBC Foundation, and Silver Eagle Beverages.
