Bone Health and Conditions.

November 2020 Educational Handout

Why is bone health important?
Bones are important in helping us with posture and movement. Bones protect your organs, store calcium, and help keep muscles in place by providing acting as anchors.

Bones are constantly changing as old bone material is replaced with new bone material. This is why it is important for children to plenty of calcium and vitamin D from their diet as people younger than 30 usually build new bone material faster than they break it down.

What affects bone health?
Bone health is affected by:
  • The amount of calcium in your diet: low calcium diets lead to early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures.
  • Physical activity: move more to decrease your risk of osteoporosis.
  • Tobacco and alcohol use: drinking more than one drink a day for women or two for men may lead to weak bones as well using tobacco products.
  • Race: Those at greatest risk are people who are ethnically white or Asian.
  • Gender: women have a higher risk for developing osteoporosis.
  • Hormones: hyperthyroidism may lead to osteoporosis. Menopause causes bone loss due to lowered estrogen levels.
  • Being underweight: BMI less than 19 may mean you have a lower bone density.
  • Medications: talk to your doctor about your risk.
Common Bone Diseases:
  • Osteoporosis: known as the silent disease as many who have this disorder are unaware of it. This is caused by the thinning of bones which may cause loss of height.

  • Paget’s Disease: this is a bone remodeling disease caused by excessive bone breakdown followed by a higher rate of bone formation that leads to larger bones that are softer than normal. This leads to pain and fractures.

  • Osteoarthritis: common in older people. Affects the joints and makes movement painful and difficult due to worn down cartilage.

  •  Rheumatoid Arthritis: usually develops by the age of 45 and affects the joints. This is caused by infection which leads to inflammation of the joints.

Recommendations:
  • Talk to your doctor about a vitamin D supplement and eat 3-4 servings of calcium rich foods each day. Do not smoke and limit alcohol use.
  • Work on your posture, balance, and be active every day for at least 30 minutes.

Salud y Enfermedades de los Huesos

Noviembre 2020.
