Each month, our clients receive a nutrition education handout along with their meal. The goal of these handouts is to improve your nutrition knowledge and empower you to make the best dietary choices for yourself. It's important for everyone to adopt healthy eating habits and to understand the essential nutrients and their dietary requirements. The information clients received this month is included below.

How To Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle During the Holidays
Cheers, the holidays are here! While they may look different this year, the tradition of celebrating with food isn’t going away. There will be a lot of choices, some healthier than others, and some we may want to limit, but it is possible to navigate this in a healthy manner. As always, please share any tips or ideas you may have with our Meals on Wheels family through Facebook, Twitter, or our Instagram page. We love hearing from our clients and spreading the holiday cheer! Happy Holidays!
#1: There will be lots of appetizers and treats. Portion sizes are worth being mindful of. Moving away from the buffet line/trays while socializing can help with the unconscious nibbling.
#2: COVID-19 is still around, and it is important to keep everyone’s safety in mind. Remember to limit the number of loved ones at gatherings and stay home if you are feeling ill. Wash your hands and sanitize regularly.
#3: Eat before your gathering; missing meals doesn’t mean you can make up for two or three meals at once. A small snack before going will help reduce overeating later.
#4: Sides can be the most exciting part of holiday meals, try to fill half your plate with options that have fruit and vegetables in them. More colors equal more nutrients!
#5: Alcohol is common at holiday parties. If you are of legal age to drink, it is always smart to consume alcohol safely and in moderation. Drinking water can be a great way to satisfy your thirst. Always remember to plan ahead and have a designated driver if traveling is required.
#6: Don’t forget to get out and be active. A few extra activities can help burn off the extra energy we consume with holiday meals. Find activities that the whole family can enjoy, getting everyone involved.
