As the summer heat peaks, we are focused on keeping your loved ones safe and hydrated. Individuals living with dementia are especially vulnerable to high temperatures, with increased risk of cognitive decline. Research indicates that individuals with dementia are six times more likely to face dehydration than individuals without the condition. Unfortunately, it is very common for people with dementia to lose the physical sensation of thirst and the ability to communicate that they need fluids.
Some Signs of Dehydration to Look Out for Include:
-
Increased confusion or disorientation: more foggy than usual, or a sudden change in mood or agitation
-
Sudden balance problems: increased weakness, dizziness, or unsteadiness
-
Physical symptoms: dry mouth, chapped lips, sunken eyes, and headaches
-
Changes in urination: such as the frequency or urine that appears darker in color
Strategies to Maintain Hydration:
-
Keep water within sight and easy reach, such as placing bottles in their direct line of view
-
Use brightly colored cups or straws
-
Offer water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber, spinach, or popsicles
-
Add flavor to water with sliced fruit or a splash of juice
-
Encourage them to drink water each time after using the bathroom
Please remember to give yourself grace as you navigate this difficult journey. We are here to support you and are truly grateful for trusting us to care for your loved one.
