WHY MARCH?

Meals on Wheels America created the March for Meals to commemorate the month in 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older [5]. We continue to observe and celebrate the work that has been done for over 50 years to advance senior nutrition across the country by inviting elected officials and community leaders to donate or volunteer with us, while also acknowledging the work left to be done.

We are actively engaging the community to become Community Champions. Below are some ways to help us End the Wait, but don't forget to advocate on social media or contact your local elected official(s)!

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

For far too long, the pressing needs of seniors have been underfunded and ignored, leaving millions nationwide waiting for nutritious meals and moments of connection. In South Central Texas, seniors interested in Meals on Wheels San Antonio are currently on a 12-month wait list, with over 1,000 individuals waiting to receive services. Our seniors on our waitlist make up nearly 13 million nationwide, who worry about having enough food and/or face food insecurity [1]. This affects many facets of their life, with studies showing that food insecurity is associated with an estimated $78 billion in healthcare costs annually [2].

MEALS ON WHEELS AS A PROVEN SOLUTION

Even though Meals on Wheels has been proven to be the most effective solution to senior hunger and isolation, we’re waiting, too — waiting for more government funding, donations, and volunteers.

Meals on Wheels San Antonio currently provides More Than A Meal to over 4,000 clients, ensuring they receive a nutritious meal, a safety check, and a friendly hello. While easily overlooked, daily interactions help combat the epidemic of social isolation [3] that is developing in our senior lives. Studies show that 56% of seniors feel lonely, costing Medicare an estimated $6.7 billion annually (2012 dollars) and being associated with greater Medicare spending of $1,644 per beneficiary per year [4].
