October 15, 2025 - Meals on Wheels San Antonio, a nonprofit dedicated to providing nutritious meals, friendly visits, and safety checks to homebound seniors, announces that due to a significant funding reduction from the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG), meal delivery services for hundreds of Bexar County clients will be suspended beginning the week of November 3, 2025.
This reduction means the organization will no longer be able to serve many seniors currently relying on the program for daily meals and wellness checks. The suspension also affects AniMeals, a companion pet food service that many clients depend on.
Services will remain suspended for an undetermined length of time, with a possibility of reinstatement if additional funding becomes available.
Meals on Wheels has already contacted clients who are impacted by this service suspension.
This funding reduction has an immediate and profound impact on vulnerable seniors in the community—many of whom rely on meal delivery as their primary source of nutrition and social contact.
Meals on Wheels San Antonio uses the Texas Health and Human Services Consumer Needs Evaluation to determine service eligibility. While individuals with a score of 20 or above may qualify for services, client scores have been reviewed, and only those with the highest levels of need can currently be served due to limited resources.
Clients are being contacted directly about service suspension, alternative meal options, and community resources.
To help sustain services, Meals on Wheels San Antonio is asking clients to consider a Client Supported Meal Option. This option allows current individuals with sufficient income to continue receiving meals for a monthly contribution of $100, helping the organization serve those in greater need.
Meal deliveries will continue through the week of October 27, 2025, after which services will be paused until further notice.
“This is one of the most difficult decisions we’ve ever had to make,” said Vinsen Faris, CEO of Meals on Wheels San Antonio. “We know how much these meals and visits mean to our clients — they provide nourishment, companionship, and safety. We are doing everything we can to fill the funding gap and continue serving those who depend on us. As always, we encourage you to check on your senior neighbors.”
A letter outlining details, resource referrals, and meal assistance alternatives is being sent to all affected clients.
