August 2026 Volunteer Newsletter

One of the greatest gifts you can give our senior neighbors isn't just a meal—it's your consistency.

When you commit to an ongoing route assignment, you become more than a volunteer delivering meals. You become a familiar face, a trusted visitor, and an important part of someone's week. Many of our clients eagerly look forward to seeing familiar faces each visit. Those regular interactions build trust, reduce feelings of isolation, and remind our seniors that their community cares.

An ongoing assignment benefits you, too!

Why Choose an Ongoing Route Assignment?

Build Meaningful Connections with Your Clients

Seeing the same clients regularly allows you to develop genuine relationships built on trust, familiarity, and compassion. Your visits often become something your clients look forward to each week.

Provide Consistency for Your Senior Neighbors

Familiar faces bring comfort and reassurance. Consistent volunteers help clients feel safe, valued, and connected, especially for those with limited social interaction.

Get First Choice of Your Preferred Route

Volunteers with ongoing assignments receive priority for their established route, allowing you to serve in the area that best fits your schedule and preferences.

Save Time and Reduce Weekly Registration Stress

No need to sign up every week or worry about your preferred route filling up! Your assignment is already reserved, making volunteering simple and convenient.

Create a Routine That Fits Your Life

A regular schedule makes it easier to incorporate volunteering into your weekly routine, turning your commitment into a rewarding habit.

Notice Changes That Matter

Because you know your clients, you're more likely to recognize changes in their well-being or living situation. Reporting concerns helps Meals on Wheels provide timely support when it's needed most.

Volunteer of the Month: YMSL, NCL, and SASO Youth Volunteers

Our dedicated Youth Volunteers support Meals on Wheels San Antonio in a variety of ways, including meal delivery, AniMeals deliveries, and on-site meal packing. They often volunteer alongside their parents, guardians, siblings, and friends, making service a meaningful family and community experience.

Many of our Youth Volunteers have spent their summers and weekends serving with Meals on Wheels San Antonio for years. Their commitment was especially impactful during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they helped ensure our neighbors continued to receive nutritious meals and caring visits during a time of great need!

Why They Volunteer: Our Youth Volunteers are passionate about giving back to the community and making a meaningful difference in others' lives while serving alongside family and friends. Here’s what they had to say!

I enjoy the quality time with my mom and getting to serve others at the same time.

The little bit of interaction with our neighbors makes our day!

We truly enjoy helping those in need, seeing the joy on people's faces, and the sweet conversations we get to have with the clients.

Meals on Wheels has really opened my eyes to see that some people really need help, even when you can't always see it.

Meet the Community Engagement Team

Behind every successful event, outreach effort, and volunteer opportunity is our Community Engagement Team!

This dedicated group works year-round to build meaningful connections with our community, strengthen partnerships, and create opportunities for volunteers to make a lasting impact.

Whether they're coordinating events, welcoming new volunteers, or connecting with local organizations, the team is committed to fostering a spirit of service and collaboration. The next time you see a Community Engagement Team member, be sure to say hello—they're always happy to answer questions, share upcoming opportunities, and help you get involved!

If you'd like, I can also make it more casual, more mission-focused, or tailor it to your organization's specific programs and team members.

Clients are assigned either Ensure, Glucerna, or Nepro based on their nutritional needs. Please verify the correct supplement before each delivery. It is important that clients receive only the brand assigned to them!

As with meal delivery, do not leave any items outside a client's home.

Clients receiving a nutrition supplement for the first time will also receive a letter explaining why they are receiving it and how to best enjoy it. Please be sure to deliver the letter along with their first supplement.
