Meals on Wheels is warning of the risk of elderly people being malnourished or going hungry.

The nonprofit cooks up about 4,000 meals a day but knows with one in six seniors at risk of going hungry, there are many more people who need the help.

"Some of the elderly people that I deliver to don't have family to be there for them,” says Meals on Wheels driver Lucinda Medina. "They need to make sure they're getting their meat, their vegetables, their milk.”

A local non-profit that feeds thousands of San Antonio senior citizens, is in need of help to keep making meals for the growing number of clients.

Odell Lewis, 94, is a World War 2 veteran and a Meals on Wheels client.

“They provide a good healthy meal,” said Lewis.

The non-profit provides a hot meal to more than 3,000 home bound seniors daily across Bexar County with over 200 volunteers.

“It's a great thing to have this,” added Lewis.

Every day, the north side resident gets one meal delivered to his home. He’s got the morning covered.

A staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II, Louisa Pledger was known as “Sgt. Sunshine’’ because she’s the one who distributed the pay envelopes to Marines who were patients at the Naval Hospital San Diego in Balboa Park.

Widowed after nearly 50 years of marriage, she fell and broke a shoulder and a hip 10 years ago. She uses a walker to get around but at age 90, Pledger retains a sharp mind, great memory and a chipper attitude.

A client of Meals on Wheels, she likes the food and enjoys visits from the volunteers, most of them employees of Valero Energy Corporation.
